Background:
On Wednesday, June 10, 2026, Los Angeles Senior High School and STEAM Magnet initiated a campus-wide lockdown at approximately 8:15 a.m., prior to the start of the instructional day, in response to reports of a possible weapon on campus. The school immediately implemented established emergency procedures and notified the Los Angeles School Police Department (LASPD), the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), and Region West Operations. Law enforcement conducted a comprehensive search of the campus while the school remained in lockdown. Throughout the incident, students were kept under the direct supervision of certificated and classified staff.
Due to the lockdown occurring before the official start of the instructional day, students reported to the nearest available supervised location rather than their scheduled classrooms. As a result, the regular instructional schedule could not be implemented, and students did not receive their scheduled classroom instruction during the lockdown period. Following the release of the lockdown at 1:24 p.m., students proceeded to lunch and remained under school supervision until the regularly scheduled dismissal at 2:16 p.m. In consultation with District Operations, students were not returned to their scheduled classes due to the limited instructional time remaining in the day and the need to support an orderly transition following the emergency response.
Communication with families and staff was maintained throughout the incident via email, phone, and the District website.

Board Options and Consequences:
Adoption will enable staff to formally request from the CDE an allowance of attendance for Los Angeles Senior High School and STEAM Magnet by filing the Form J-13A, Request for Allowance of Attendance Due to Emergency Conditions. CDE’s approval of Form J-13A is needed to receive credit for the instructional time lost due to the emergency lockdown.
If not adopted, Los Angeles Senior High School and STEAM Magnet will need to make up the lost instructional time to avoid a significant fiscal penalty for failing to meet the statutory instructional day requirement.
