Whereas, Women in the United States have continuously and courageously worked to secure full rights and equal opportunities - political, economic, educational, and social - through individual and collective action across generations;
Whereas, The early women’s rights movement, marked by the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention and the Declaration of Sentiments, established a foundation for advancing equality and expanding democratic participation;
Whereas, Women of diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds - including Black women, Indigenous women, Asian American women, Latina women, and immigrant women - have played vital and often underrecognized roles in the suffrage movement and the broader struggle for civil rights;
Whereas, The ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920 granted women the constitutional right to vote, and subsequent civil rights legislation, including the Voting Rights Act of 1965, helped expand access to full enfranchisement;
Whereas, Congress formally designated August 26 as Women’s Equality Day in 1973 to commemorate the certification of the Nineteenth Amendment and to recognize ongoing efforts toward gender equity;
Whereas, The women’s rights movement has led to major advancements in education and the workplace, including Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which expanded access and protections for female students in schools and athletics;
Whereas, The Los Angeles Unified School District serves nearly 442,000 students across more than 1,322 schools, making it the second-largest school system in the United States and a critical driver of opportunity for young women and girls;
Whereas, Female students represent approximately half of the District’s student population, reflecting the District’s role in educating and empowering the next generation of women leaders;
Whereas, As one of the largest and most diverse school districts in the nation, female students, educators, and staff play a critical role in shaping academic excellence, leadership, and the future of Los Angeles communities;
Whereas, The District has seen generations of female students achieve academic success and leadership milestones, supported by dedicated teachers, administrators, counselors, and classified staff many of whom are women and who serve as mentors, innovators, and advocates for equity;
Whereas, Female students in the District continue to benefit from expanded opportunities in science, technology, mathematics, athletics, and leadership programs while also facing ongoing challenges related to equity, access, and representation that require continued attention and support;
Whereas, Women educators and staff within the District have been at the forefront of advancing inclusive learning environments, promoting student well-being, and advocating for fair workplace practices and professional opportunities;
Whereas, As of 2026, women have made historic gains in leadership at local, state, and national levels, including in education systems like the District, yet disparities remain in pay equity, leadership representation, and access to opportunities impacting both students and staff; and
Whereas, Recognizing Women’s Equality Day as a national day of celebration reinforces the importance of education systems, such as the District, promoting gender equity, empowering young women, and cultivating future leaders; now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That the Los Angeles Unified School District formally commemorates Women’s Equality Day on August 26, 2026 as a national day of celebration;
Resolved further, That this day honors the legacy of the women’s suffrage movement and recognizes the ongoing efforts to secure and expand equal rights and opportunities for all women and girls;
Resolved further, That special recognition is given to the female students, educators, and staff of the District for their contributions to education, leadership, and community advancement;
Resolved further, That the Governing Board of the Los Angeles Unified School District encourages all schools to promote educational programs, civic engagement, and leadership opportunities that empower young women and support gender equity across all disciplines; and, be it finally
Resolved, That this recognition reaffirms a shared commitment to building an inclusive, equitable, and democratic future through education, opportunity, and the continued advancement of women’s rights.
